Sustainability

Sustainability is based on a simple principle: everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony that permits fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations.

Sustainable Jersey

Sustainable Jersey is a certification program for municipalities in New Jersey that want to go green, save money and take steps to sustain their quality of life over the long term. Launched in 2009, we are a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that provides tools, training and financial incentives to support and reward communities as they pursue sustainability programs.

Sustainable Jersey certification is a prestigious designation for municipal governments in New Jersey. Municipalities that achieve the certification are considered by their peers, by state government and by the experts and civic organizations in New Jersey, to be among the leading municipalities. The certification is a rigorous and meaningful designation. All actions taken by municipalities to score points toward certification must be accompanied by documentary evidence and is reviewed. The certification is free and completely voluntary.

Pennsauken Township, through the efforts of the Green Team has received Bronze Certification.

Community Visioning

Community Visioning is the process by which a community envisions the future it wants through meaningful public participation. Community engagement helps to distill the values and priorities that will contribute to a sustainable future. Visioning initiatives are the inspirational starting point for a comprehensive sustainability planning process. The visioning process evaluates the community as it currently exists, identifies what is valued in the community, and encourages stakeholders to imagine where it would like the community to be in ten or twenty years. This shared vision creates the basis for developing goals and completing actions that move the community toward a more ideal, sustainable community. Typically the community vision will be used to guide the establishment of community plans and programs, personal behaviors, and government decisions.
